Fuschl am See
The historic epicenter of the picturesque town Fuschl am See was the castle. In the 15th century, it was built by the highly fashionable Salzburger Archbishops and attained worldwide fame in the 1950s. As the setting for the "Sissi" films with Romy Schneider, scenes from Sissi's home castle Possenhofen in Bavaria were filmed here. Schloss Fuschl appeared to accentuate the unburdened childhood of the future movie-empress better than the original. Today, the castle is a hotel which is prominently booked around festival time.
A visit to the parish church could bring relief in many respects. Its patron is the St. Erasmus. He ranks among the 14 Holy Helpers and gets invoked for colic and stomach pains. His permanent attribute, the winds, made him also the patron saint of sailors and rope makers.
The lake itself is, at 67m (220ft.), a pleasant temperature for swimming. In 2008, a lake resort with an indoor pool and children's area was opened.
In the historic Ruming Mill, bread is baked on two days during summer, and thereby a glimpse into the past is made possible.
Extensive hikes by rest and exercise spots along the Via Sacra, the age-old pilgrim route, along with over 20 cultivated alpine pastures in the region offer visitors and locals unforgettable, restorative hours.
